Mayor Brian Gibson launched the 2017 Gannawarra Golden Shoe Trophy on Tuesday to a very excited crowd of students and teachers. From 3rd October, classes will be competing for the coveted Gannawarra Golden Shoe Trophy and crowned the 2017 Champions!
For two years in a row, the Year 5/6 students have held the title achieving participation across the month of 74%. Can the Prep, or Grade 1, 2, 3 and 4 students be crowned class champions this year???
Last year, 98% of students walked, rode or scooted to school
1324 times - that’s about 950 kilometres - equivalent to walking from Kerang to
further than Sydney! This year students are hoping to get to the Gold Coast or
Perth, with some students looking to walk to Antarctica if the weather gets too
warm! Will they make it to their destinations? We can’t wait to come back in
November and see how far they have travelled!
Students were also given an extra incentive to travel
actively to school this October, with a teacher competing against the whole
school for the most steps. Teacher vs students – who do you think will come out
on top??
The VicHealth Walk to School program promotes the importance
of children being Active and Healthy in their communities and fitting at least
60 minutes of physical activity into their daily lives. Getting actively to
school, the school bus, or while at school not only helps keep children fit and
healthy, it also helps them to stay alert, to concentrate and improves learning
outcomes.
The Gannawarra VicHealth Walk to School program is rolled
out across the Gannawarra Shire as a Gannawarra Local Agency Meeting (GLAM) partnership
project. This is a partnership between Gannawarra Shire Council, Northern
District Community Health, Kerang District Health, Cohuna District Hospital,
Mallee District Aboriginal Service, Victoria Police and Mallee Family Care with
support from the Southern Mallee Primary Care Partnership.
