For the third consecutive year Gannawarra Shire
Council is coordinating a local VicHealth Walk to School program after
successfully applying for a $10,000 VicHealth grant.
All eleven local primary schools will participate in
this year’s program of events with playgroups and kindergartens invited to join
in activities along with families and the wider community.
The Gannawarra Walk to School program will be
delivered in partnership with local health agencies throughout October.
Mayor Neville Goulding said living a healthy active
lifestyle is important for children’s health and wellbeing.
“Children, who walk and ride to school, or to the
school bus, arrive at school more energetic and ready to learn. Getting actively to and from school also
contributes to the recommended minimum physical activity level for a child of
60 minutes per day.”

This year’s Gannawarra Walk to School program will
involve almost 800 primary school children who will be encouraged to walk,
ride, skate or scoot to school each day throughout October.
Cr Goulding said that spring is the perfect time to
get outdoors and walk.
“Walking is a great way to improve wellbeing by enjoying
some fresh air, sunshine and meeting other people.”
